Seattle paper lists addresses of homes with McCain signs

By day, it's a standard collection of yard signs on a well-manicured lawn. But at night, it's a GOP graveyard, where the yard-sign tombstones are unearthed by zombie candidates hungry for brains. Do you have what it takes to drive a stake through the heart of zombie Dino Rossi or blast a shotgun into the chest of zombie Dave Reichert or fight off the reanimated ashes of Steve Litzow, swirling out of that terrifying urn? Run.

For the Seattle paper to list and picture homes that have McCain/Palin signs is horrible! I would be livid if I lived there and my home was featured in the paper this way. It is completely unacceptable! It is as if they are inviting people to tear down the signs or vandalize the property in some way.

I'll admit - my first thought in reading the OP was "it seems out there that a paper would actually do this."

So, I went looking for the source and it didn't take to long to find it.

It appears to be a paper out of Seattle.

One interesting bit I noticed was that other articles in the paper give the writer's name. The one that lists the houses with Repub. signs is simply written by "Stranger Staff".

Hmmmm... That's interesting. They give addresses, photo's and comments like, "The nightmare has just begun for you, Republican fence." in the article but they won't give the name of the writer. Gee - I wonder why?

Ooops, sorry about not having a link to the source. Not sure how I left that out but I greatly appreciate you adding it.

The majority of the McCain/Palin banners that people have put out in our neighborhood have been stolen. If I had to choose, I would prefer people steal my sign to having my house listed in the paper as a hell house!

I would really hate to have to burst their bubble but this article is what HLS is calling terrorist acts!
Wonder how long it will take them to shut down the paper and arrest all the terrorists?

So it would be ok with you if the properties pictured were vadalized because they had Republican signs?

If another paper published pictures, addresses and similar comments except with homes that displayed Democrat signs - and those homes were vandalized would you be ok with that?

If not, why? Surely if one is ok then the other must be too?

Yes, it's very irresponsible to print someone's address simply because of the signs in someone's yard whether in jest for Halloween or not. I hope these homes aren't vandalized, but if they are I think the owners of that site should be held responsible for any damage. The line must simply be drawn somewhere.

This country is apparently filled with morons and journalism indeed is dead.

EXACTLY!!! And it would be discussed on the MSM non-stop!

I think that everyone, Democrats, Republicans, Independants, etc. should be outraged by this. It is beyond unprofessional.

It sure seems that way.

I wonder if this is someone's way of doing what Obama said when he told his supporters to get in people's faces and argue with them ... the press decided to make it easy for Obama Supporters to make their statement to anyone who dared to cross the messiah.

That is the kind of thing that makes me refute Obama even more. The children acting up in this election need to learn that their behavior is directly linked to the candidates and WILL affect the way people think.

Just an update on this as I checked this thread and noticed people saying they couldn't get the link to work anymore.

So, I did a little reasearch and it seems they have taken it down.

Here are their reasons:

Last Thursday we published a story called “Hell Houses” about houses on the Eastside displaying McCain and Palin yard signs. We were parodying a certain kind of daily newspaper feature—the “houses with the best Halloween/Christmas decorations” article, which typically includes addresses—and so we included addresses. There was no incitement to violence or incitement to anything else, and the piece was very clearly parody. (The introduction: “Cobwebs and witches are for children and morons. If you’re looking for the most hair-raising Halloween horrors, try scouring the streets of the Eastside. That’s where we found the most pants-wettingly scary houses…. Because in an election year, nothing’s more terrifying than the future.” From later in the piece: “Without a doubt, this is no home to man, but a monolithic holding cell packed floor-to-ceiling with bubbling black goo.”) The point was that our readers, typically liberal, would be chilled by these “Halloween” displays.

After the piece came out on Wednesday morning, there was no violence, no vandalism. There was some debate on The Stranger’s website on Thursday and Friday about the piece’s inclusion of addresses—about the homeowners’ and The Stranger’s right to free speech, and about yards signs as public discourse—and some readers posted addresses of Stranger staffers in comments, because turnabout is fair play. We did not remove those comments and left our own addresses up on our website.

On Saturday morning the piece exploded on right-wing blogs, and death threats were made on our staff. What began as political satire changed from reasonably intelligent, irreverent discourse to something ugly. We do not want harm to come to anyone—to those who live in the houses (from wannabe Ashley Todds) or to our staff (from right-wing nuts)—so we’ve taken the piece down.

We regret that people are crazy.

Thank you very much for the update.

I didn't care for the tone of their explanation and feel that they should have been less sarcastic, but at least they did remove the items from their site.
