Were "Hobbits" Human?

Until more evidence is produced, its a lumper vs splitter debate.

More than likely a small population of Homo erectus made it to the island and never left. Its a case of allopatric speciation.

The shape of the skulls is more closely related to Homo erectus than they are to Homo sapiens.
