Cheney advocates for Georgia to join NATO

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) -- Demonstrating Washington's support for war-ravaged Georgia, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney condemned Russia for what he calls a closely watched trip to this strategic South Caucasus nation, Cheney also said the United States was "fully committed" to Georgian efforts to join NATO.

There's just one itsy bitsy problem. NATO doesn't really want Georgia's baggage - a violent dispute with Russia. I doubt if Cheney can convince the NATO states to open themselves up for a war with Russia.

Such a problem may prove to be more than "itsy bitsy"!
NATO may not want Georgia's baggage...nor Ukraine's, for that matter. HOWEVER, and this is a BIG however...proximity to Russia [missile-defense systems, for starters], plus, ahem, good old OIL has to sweeten the deal.

Your final point is a good one; to admit Georgia, Ukraine, et al. into NATO ups the stakes considerably in the geo-political maneuvering these days.
