5.8 quake hits metro L.A.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — A magnitude-5.8 earthquake has struck just east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake’s epicenter was about 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Diamond Bar, the USGS said. The center was about 7.6 miles (12 km) deep, making it a fairly shallow quake, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Meyers. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth’s surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake struck at 11:42 a.m. (2:42 p.m. ET), according to the USGS. A handful of aftershocks in the range of magnitude 2.8 and 3.8 ensued
