Telescreens in Every Town

www.timesonline.co.uk

Like the television in a bar that you can’t keep your eyes off, a network of giant outdoor screens is about to provide a constant neon distraction from the charms of Britain’s historic market squares during the 2012 Olympics.

Organisers keen to ensure that the public do not miss a moment of the world’s biggest sporting event are planning to broadcast around the clock in 60 towns and cities.

The scheme to operate the largest network of public screens seen in Britain, announced today in partnership with the BBC, has been condemned as irresponsible by heritage groups.

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) accused the London Olympics organisers of plastering the country in “digital wallpaper” after it emerged that many of the 400-inch screens would not be temporary, as originally suggested.

The choice of title was deliberate - 1984 anyone?

It shouldn't be permitted! I should be able to go into town without having this thrust down my throat.

That it will remain after the Olympics, is scandalous. What about audio? Will audio be broadcast all the time????

OMG... I hope these get vandalized ASAP.

Well, not this little town
Fast food - none. Sports bars - none. NWO - whaaaaa? traffic lights - none.

I feel bad for all of you in city centers, besieged on every side by flashy neon advertisements. Good of you to bring this to our attention, so we can decide in advance whether we want to view the spectacle in huge screen TV.

I'd personally be happy if I could just pick up Glenn Beck on satellite tv. Oh Glennie. I watched you once.

It's not quite the same thing, but there are plenty of electronic billboards around Boise, where I live. I don't have much problem with them since they tend to spew only advertisements and not government propaganda so much, but I'm just waiting for the day I see---

"George Bush loves you."

The nearest city to me already has a huge television, owned by the BBC. It's on pretty much 24/7 and includes quite loud audio. I'm not sure if other cities have one of these already? If not, it won't be long before they do!

Moaning billboards aside, we have one surveillance camera per 14 people in the UK. Televisions are the screen.
