ok, here's the scoop.

A friend of mine and I have been debating the Schrödinger's cat thought experiment. My friend feels by shaking the box that you could determine whether the cat was alive or not without invalidating the experiment. I however feel that by shaking the box you are in essence taking a measurement and collapsing the waves of probability and forcing a result.

What's your take on this?

You are taking a measurement by shaking the box.

It's only a metaphor.
