Swiss Man soars with home made jet powered wing

news.yahoo.com

BEX, Switzerland - A Swiss pilot strapped on a jet-powered wing and leaped from a plane Wednesday for the first public demonstration of the homemade device, turning figure eights and soaring high above the Alps.

Rossy, 48, had stepped out of the Swiss-built Pilatus Porter aircraft at 7,500 feet and unfolded the rigid eight-foot wings strapped to his back before jumping.

Passing from free fall to a gentle glide, Rossy then triggered four jet turbines and accelerated to 186 miles per hour, about 65 miles per hour faster than the typical falling skydiver. A plane that flew at some distance beside him measured his speed.

Imagine the potential involved here. A personal jet powered wing able to be deployed from a high altitude aircraft. All I can say is wow, this man is onto something here.

Yves Rossy went on to say that the machine had not been tested to it's full potential and could do even more. He even designed safety features like a parachute into the device.

He states that on his next trip he would like to fly the english channel, he's going to practice by flying between two air balloons. The english channel is 22 miles wide. This aircraft has enough fuel storage to fly 22 wides. I'm sure the military cant wait to get their hands on this little beauty.

Well done to Yves Rossy.
