Archivist's Notes: This reports basically gives the coordinates of T142 at 18:30 GOLF. It also mentions that this vessel was possibly involved in the Desoto Mission.

This document is one of several readiness reports of activity by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) after the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, in which the DRV attacked US Naval vessels on Aug. 2nd, 1964.

At 1208Z 02 August, vessel T142 ((A)) position report as
of 1830 (GOLF time) was reported at 19-36-36N 106-05-05-
05E.
This vessel was probably involved in attach on Despto[sic]

The Gulf of Tonkin Incident prompted the US Congress to pass the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which gave President Johnson authority to use military force to defend allies in the area and ultimately lead to the beginning of the Vietnam War.
