I heard that many are believing that the attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941 was also was known by the U.S. Government, such as 9/11.

I just read after the U.S.S. Arizona and the sad events of Pearl Harbor and I found a strange coincidence, regarding the U.S.S. Arizona's two chief officers.

Admiral Isaac C. Kidd
His body was never recovered; Navy salvage divers located his Naval Academy ring fused to a bulkhead on Arizona's bridge.
Rear Admiral Willson was relieved as Commander, Battleship Division 1 by Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, on 23 January 1941
en.wikipedia.org...

Captain Van Valkenburgh
Relieved Capt. Harold C. Train, on 5 February 1941
A subsequent search recovered only Van Valkenburgh's class ring.
en.wikipedia.org...

Strange that the two chief officers relieved the original officers of the Arizona within a month, and none of their body's was ever found, just their class ring.

Any thoughts are welcome.

The blast that rocked the Arizona when her magazines went up was horrific. It was FELT in areas a good distance away. It's a miracle ANYONE survived it. It was one of the most recognized images of the attack, and every time we went to the memorial and watched the video I got chills seeing the shots of her going up.

39 survived. And after the explosion is happened in the nose section, it's possible that they survived. The bridge was around turret No. 4, where most of the survivors were (If I'm not mistaken.).

It was more than 39, it was 335 total. And if the Bridge was near turret 4 that would have put it all the way at the stern of the ship. The turrets were labled in order from bow to stern. The Bridge was closer to turret 2, but it was between 2 and 3. When the bomb hit the magazine, it separated the bow from the rest of the ship and lifted the hull clear of the water for a second, before it slammed back down. Only 107 crew members were EVER identified. Out of the 1070 that were left, none were positively identified, and most were dismembered.

The blast was so bad that the second deck MELTED into other decks, and turret 1 and 2 collapsed 20 feet into the hull. Turret 1 is still on the hull, 2 was scrapped, 3 and 4 were removed from the hull and used as defense batteries.

Wow...how did I miss a battleship thread?

Zaphod58's already done a great job here in setting a few facts in order, and explaining the condition of the class rings (and the bodies in general, or lack of same).

One thing that bothers me...what makes people think that the US government had prior knowledge of an attack on Pearl Harbor?

just for statistical comparison - can you cite how man other vessels in the pacific fleet had changers in comand in the month before the pearl harbour attack - there were over 100 vessels present - and most survived

for a real comparision - transfers of command in the atlantic fleet for the same period would be most enlightening

because ships companies and commands change with some frequency

also - do you think that the orrigional commanders would have done anything different - or fared any beter ?

lastly - found this :

Captain John D. McDonald, USN 17 Oct 1916-18 Feb 1918
Captain Josiah S. McKean, UNS 18 Feb 1918-11 Sep 1918
