Having served in the US military, I can asure you that not every soldier there was playing with a full deck.(And after a few months in country, the number went up.) Naturally, at that time, mental illness wasn't diagnosed in every fourth human the way it is now, so officially they were no different from any other soldier.

Part of the leadership tasks any soldier learns is to fit the person to the job. You didn't hand some skinny 5 foot 3 inch, 138 pound kid, the heaviest weapon in your squad. You didn't expect some grunt that looked at the world through glasses that seemed to be made from the bottom of coke bottles to be of much use as a forward observer.

There's nothing wrong with people from all walks of life, and with the whole range of human abilities and faults, from serving in the military. Not everybody needs to be a Rambo. (Rambo didn't need to be Rambo, and his type usually were the first to go down anyway.)
