New Mexico Green Fireball Sighting Investigation
This is a nearly 200 page file of an investigation into the many green fireball sightings in New Mexico in the late 1940's.

Document date: 1111-11-11
Department: OSI
Author: Various
Document type: Investigative File
pages: 183

Archivist's Notes: There a some blank pages, some illegible pages, many difficult to read and many pages that are fully legible. A little bit of everything. Numerous sightings of the green fireballs, numerous correspondence from Lincoln LaPaz, information included by the weather service to try and point the cause to balloons, for the most part these sightings were determined not to be balloons or meteors. Some references to a comparison to the V2 rockets from a witness to these over Great Britain during WW II. I couldn't see a conclusion paper so this might be just a gathering of all the investigations, and the subsequent conclusion and plan to approach these sightings remain sealed from the public. It will take time to scour through this one to connect to other FOIA files, and try and piece together all the details of this green fireball phenomena over the New Mexico skies.

This document appears to be a compilation of the many reports of Green Fireballs in the New Mexico vicinity. Some of these have already been covered individually here in the FOIA forum. I did not see anything out of the ordinary in this document.

In the regard of this document I would like to add some more details. Being a large file that deals mainly with a phenomena like the green fireball maybe won't get the right attention but is a document worth the time to go through in order to understand the seriousness that Air Force dealt with it.

In some cases the objects thought to be weather balloons were in fact unknown . Launching time of the balloons didn't match with the time of the sightings. In other cases the flying pattern itself was contradictory with that of a weather balloon. And yet in other cases the speed, trails, color and movements made it impossible for the object to be classified as a balloon.

The same contradiction we find with the classification as meteorites. Some time sightings lasted for minutes (even 75 minutes with a very slow movement) and some time for seconds. Some time the objects separated in three to four smaller ones with the same characteristics, color, brightness, flying pattern, altitude... Same times there movement was erratic and upward which makes it impossible to be a meteorite.

The above were just to mention few off the details regarding the green fireball phenomena but throughout the whole document there are countless more details and specifics whic IMO make it a very interesting document to read.
