This report is an overview of the Blue Mountains Observatory re-activation process from the time of July 1996 to July 2001. BMO was originally designed to receive information from the Vela satellites in the 1960s.

Pdf pg 5:
The site’s new purpose .. “is to use a wide dynamic range digital array of broadband and short period seismographs to explore how accurately regional events can be located with a single array-type station. Such research has ramifications for monitoring of explosions that may be related to weapons development. It also has implications for the monitoring of seismicity for research and geologic hazard studies.”

This report is an extension of, and more detailed version of Zollweg’s earlier report entitled:

Regional Crustal Phase Observatory 1995.

The background information, geographical relevance of the site, purpose of the site, technical and instrumental data are all the same as the earlier report though more detailed.

This report however, updates the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (sponsoring body) about the progress of the installation.

Basically the digitizer purchased (from Guralp Systems Limited and Digital Technology Associates) for short period array failed to work which had many follow-on issues including ongoing funding, detailed on pdf pg 50-52.

At the time of the report, despite the many difficulties encountered, they still desired to complete the array and do the research.
