With no more information than this, very little can be deduced. However, I am drawn to the statement by the interviewer that the witness was a "serious type". If this was an accurate observation, it would seem unlikely that this was a hoax.

My best guess is that it was a meteor or some other natural event.

But one must not that if 'serious types' were reporting even shooting stars, then there must have been some pressure brought down from somewhere to encourage the reporting of even the most minor of lights seen in the sky. This again shows just how interested the military was in these events.
