What is the best way to make fire without using matches? I carry a magnesium fire starter in addition to matches. A good backup, though in windy conditions it be difficult to keep the mag shavings from blowing away. Its good to have at least one backup - what would you have?

Well there are a number of things in a first aid kit that I have seen mixed to create fire. Forget what they where. Also seen that a corn chip is awesome for transporting fire with u as u move with all the oils in it.

Windy conditions....how about a 9volt battery and steel wool....maybe just a windproof lighter....heck that would take less room than most things.

Les Stroud has used a battery and 2 metal poles clicking together and fumes from a gas tank to start a fire as well. Mind you limited uses their but something to still know

I was thinking more along the line of good genetics.

A magnifying glass and the sun works quite well too.

Peace

Genetics? Nah, to expensive and the maintenance of the child is way too high

How about a flamethrower?

Seriously, the best backup to matches is either a gas lighter, or... matches, albeit packed with extreme care in a gas tight, water tight plastic foil or other such container.
