Well as it looks like, Hugo Chavez has become a grave threat to neighboring "democracies". How come? I mean, is he invading his neighboring countries? Or perhaps it is just the fact, that Chavez does not want the U.S. type of "democracy", because we have seen in the history of Latin America, how these kinds of "democracies" were installed in these countries (like Chile, Nicaragua...). So who is bascily a THREAT to the region of South America?

Venezuela's regional neighbors should be ready to respond to a potential threat from President Hugo Chavez's arms build-up, which could be used to intimidate rather than for self-defense, a senior U.S. defense official said on Thursday.

Chavez, a self-styled socialist staunchly opposed to Washington, has irked the White House by spending billions of dollars on Russian fighter jets, attack helicopters and Kalashnikov rifles to refurbish the military.

The Bush administration has banned U.S. arms sales to Venezuela, criticized Chavez's purchase of jets from Moscow and said his plans to build rifle factories raise concerns about weapons reaching guerrillas in neighboring Colombia.

So a country buying weapons is a threat? What does that make Israel? Or Saudi Arabia which just bought billions of dollars in weapons from United States? As it looks like, certain socialist countries, which are not in bed with Washington, immediately represent a threat to "democracies". Looks like the paranoia is ruling Washington and they see monsters everywhere. Which is good for one thing: mass manipulation of the people. Because the more you scare them, the more they shall fear evils of socialism. And in this spotlight, in which Venezuela is, it is only natural that they modernize their army - since we all know what happened to Iraq and Saddam when he started to counter U.S. foreign and trade policies. That is why there is a number of U.S. officials and critics which brand him a would-be dictator who has undermined Venezuela's democracy. When in fact it all has to do with OIL.
