Ok good we have strep which means it's most likely due to the infection that has gone haywire and triggered her immune system to respond.

I did find one site I want you to look at. It may lead to more questions than answers but at least you can ask the questions. It's about various forms of infections when a person has had strep.

Ok, good news, she is going to be just fine. After almost 12 hours in the hospital with just about every specialist there, they figured out that is was two different things, the strep and some other long confusing named virus. These two things have never (as far as they knew) come together before. It was kind of like a yellow and blue make green thing.....two off the wall bugs came together and formed a whole new skin problem. They said she would be fine and the rash, or whatever you want to call it, will go away in about 6 weeks.

Thanks for your concern and you help in trying to figure this thing out.

I found this site searching urticaria on the Net. My friend's 15 year old boy has this. I had this when I was 32 - now am 41. I went to a lot of Doctors and was on antihistamines for a year. My Doctor got upset with me for being on them for so long and told me to quit. The hives were debilitating - caused from pressure, temp change, food, drink (ie coffee), etc. They happened overnight, I woke up one day and within a few hours was covered in hives - head to toe. I was allergic to my cat, my carpet, my steering wheel, flip flops etc. I never had hives previous and was not sick at all nor had a cold for at least 6 months or a year or so. After my Doctor told me to get off the pills I was frustrated so went to a naturopath. He did his own allergy test and said I had the worst case of allergies he'd ever seen. I was tested by the medical allergist a year prior (specialist - skin prick test) and he said I had no alleries at all. Against my naturopaths wishes I went on a very strict diet and combined an elimination diet with an anti-candida diet. I ate only organic foods and never ate the same food 2 days in a row. I ate the foods in the whole state as much as possible and ate as much raw veggies as possible. Absolutely no sugar, even fruit. Within 4 to 6 weeks I was 99% better. The first week I suffered terribly as I had to go off the antihistamines as well. I then reintroduced foods to my diet , one new food every 3 days. Today, I get hives if my diet gets bad so I just clean up my diet and I'm ok. Hope this helps. By the way, my regular Doctor thought my naturopath was a quack and the diet leading to a cure was a coincidence. Hope this helps a little.

I don't know if anyone is still following this........... but at 53 years I started getting hives and a tightness in my chest. I narrowed it to Advil or any other type of pain reliever. I rarely have a problem except some times when I drink to much beer. I hope this helps! It works for me to stay off anything that reduces pain. Sometimes hard to do.

The biggest worry you can have is if the infection, no matter how bad it looks becomes systemic. At no time did it seem that your niece was systemic. Staph, Strep, Pnemococcal and even Shingles can resolve. Watch out for the big 3. MRSA, C-DIFF, VRE. These are Bad ass.

A colleague of mine had the same symptoms. Also red itchy skin on her neck, wrists and inner thighs.

Her diagnosis was eventually HERPES ZOSTER.

I hope this helps.
