Russian subs reach Arctic floor

Two Russian mini-submarines have reached the seabed below the North Pole on a mission aimed at boosting Moscow's claims to the Arctic, reports say. A Russian official said the "risky and heroic" mission was comparable to "putting a flag on the Moon".

The two mini-submarines were brought to the North Pole by the two ships in the Russian expedition - a nuclear-powered ice-breaker and a research vessel. Russian media reported last week that the ships were briefly tailed by foreign aircraft, but this claim was played down by the expedition leader.

Considering everything that is going on in the world these days, I can't help but think Russia is up to more than just "putting a flag" down there and looking for gas.

Consider all the headlines you have seen in the past few weeks/days:

A US Navy warship sinks a N. Korean vessel while enroute to Iran.

The US and Israel are involved in a $31 billion arms deal to Saudi Arabia (Bin Laden's family). Israel has always been staunchly against any arms deals in the region.

Russia just recently signed a similar arms deal with Iran.

Turkey has become involved in the mix with 140,000 troops on the ground.

A world-wide market sell-off occurred within the past week - very similar to the one just before 9/11.

And of course, we have been getting generalized reports here at ATS that August will be an "interesting month."

So it strikes me as noteworthy when a big country like Russia takes their Navy out to the Arctic and says, "Mine." That is a rather militarily strategic region...

Anywho, just MHO.
