During the years 1963-1975, military scientists from the Microbiological Resaerch Establisment, Porton Down, conducted circa 90 public area Biological Warfare (BW) experiments in southern England.

During the field trials, massive aerosols of two types of live bacteria (E.coli MRE162 and Bacillus globigii) were sprayed from a ship, which sailed a straight-line track a few miles off the coast of southern England. These enormous bacterial clouds would be carried on shore by the wind and were sampled up to 50 miles inland by mobile teams of Porton Down scientists.
