Space Telescope "Corot" Spots New Planet

news.bbc.co.uk

The French-led Corot mission has spied its first planet - a very hot world bigger than Jupiter - passing in front of a far-off star.

Dr Suzanne Aigrain, a co-investigator on the mission and an exoplanet expert from the University of Exeter, UK, was pleased to have found a planet so soon after the launch.

She told BBC News: "It's a giant planet of similar basic structure to Jupiter, but bigger; it is about 1.3 times more massive than Jupiter and has approximately 1.5 to 1.8 times the radius.

Interesting how these news of new planets are coming out lately. This newly found planet called Corot-exo-1b is much bigger then Earth, and bigger than Jupiter - and is also far away; 1,500 light-years away in the constellation of Monoceros. It was probably spotted because it is that big, but I think more planets shall be found with this new telescope.

Or perhaps they already were found and somebody is just not telling us everything they know...

They have known about other planets, and have documented hundreds if not thousands of them for awhile now. And yes, they have said plenty about new planets, the media may say nothing because they are just planets that we can't live on. I didn't notice any unusual spike in finds, but if there is it would be due to the earth like planet being found, and the media reporting planets being found. So it's basicly an illusion that more are being found then usual.
