Microsoft has been forced to acknowledge that a substantial number of PCs running the new version of its Windows operating system will not be able to play high-quality DVDs.
...
The admission will be a blow to Microsoft, which is hoping that more users will turn to their PCs for watching films and other content.
...
“Any computer which has an LCD monitor is potentially at risk of not being able to play this content.”

This will Only encourage more hacks on the HD medium....

Actually the protection used on HD-DVD and Blu-ray has been hacked.

Microsoft is part of the HD-DVD camp, so this is probably another blow to that medium. I think M$FT bet on the wrong horse... Apple, Sony, HP and many other players are supporting Blu-ray and that seems to be the technologically better format and through the PS3 many more Blu-ray players will be out there soon. If I had to bet, Blu-ray is going to be the format of the future and HD-DVD will go the way of the Betamax. Although dual-format readers are going to be coming out, I think the industry will converge on one standard.
