The Red Sox traded 3rd baseman Shea Hillenbrand to Arizona for pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim.

Kim is a versatile right-hander who could start or close for the team, manager Grady Little said. He could see action out of the bullpen in the Red Sox series against Toronto this weekend and start for the team on Tuesday at Pittsburgh.

According to a report in the Arizona Republic, Williams confirmed that he was off the roster and designated for assignment by the team after Saturday's 8-7 loss to San Diego. The move comes in preparation for newly acquired Shea Hillenbrand.

The D-Backs traded pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim to the Boston Red Sox for Hillenbrand on Thursday.

Arizona now has 10 days to trade Williams, or release him. Either way, the D-Backs are responsible for his $10 million salary and are obligated to pay him the salary balance if they can't trade him within those 10 days.

Williams, 37, is the last member from the Diamondbacks' 1998 Opening Day roster. He finished his 2003 season hitting .246 with four home runs and 16 RBI in 44 games.

Now Boston has made Kim their closer. We all remember Kim as a closer for the D-backs in the World Series against the Yankees two years ago. I think they should have kept him as a starter as Arizona did beginning this year. Boston has a potent offense which is nice to pitch in front of.
