According to a report in the Arizona Republic, Williams confirmed that he was off the roster and designated for assignment by the team after
Saturday's 8-7 loss to San Diego. The move comes in preparation for newly acquired Shea Hillenbrand.
The D-Backs traded pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim to the Boston Red Sox for Hillenbrand on Thursday.
Arizona now has 10 days to trade Williams, or release him. Either way, the D-Backs are responsible for his $10 million salary and are obligated to pay
him the salary balance if they can't trade him within those 10 days.
Williams, 37, is the last member from the Diamondbacks' 1998 Opening Day roster. He finished his 2003 season hitting .246 with four home runs and 16
RBI in 44 games.
