A recent discovery has linked a metabolic defect to the degenerative known as Huntington's disease.

"Huntington's has been thought of primarily as a neurological disease," said Albert R. La Spada of the University of Washington, Seattle. "Our findings underscore the fact that the condition includes other, underrecognized aspects."

The discovery also opens the possibility that other neurological conditions might be related to metabolic defects.

As metabolic function generally diminishes in older people, such a connection might explain why many neurodegenerative diseases--such as Lou Gehrig's, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's diseases, for example--tend to emerge and worsen with age, La Spada said.

Huntington's disease causes abnormal body movements and loss memory. Could we see an end to neurological diseases in this century? Maybe with the help of these scientists (and mice)!

We can but live in hope. It always seems as if we are so near and yet so far to finding a cure for these terrible illnesses. Always just on the verge of that vital discovery. Lets hope that as Fred says, that all important discovery will be made sooner rather than later.
I know only too well how hard hitting these illnesses are, my mum has MND (Lou Gehrig's),sadly it's doubtful that any cure will arrive in time for her, but the thought that maybe some day others won't have to endure these awful neurological diseases is of some comfort.

Thanks Fred.
Pantha sorry to hear about your mother's condition. I believe humanity has the mind power to solve problems like this. The real problem is we are still fighting wars over oil, religion, and ideology. That's a lot of money that could be used to fight disease and poverty.
