A senior US state department official has said that the US has shown "arrogance and stupidity" in Iraq.

Alberto Fernandez told al-Jazeera TV the US was now willing to talk to any insurgent group apart from al-Qaeda in Iraq, to reduce sectarian bloodshed.
His remarks came after President George W Bush discussed changing tactics with top military commanders.

Mr Fernando's comments came after Mr. Bush said in his weekly radio address that US troops were changing tactics to deal with the insurgency. "Our goal in Iraq is clear and unchanging," he said. "Our goal is victory. What is changing are the tactics we use to achieve that goal."

And this is what James Baker had to say:

A "helluva mess" is how the former US Secretary of State James Baker is said to have described the state of Iraq - and the search is on for the least-worst option for US policy makers.

More..

So what is going to be Bush’s strategy? He’s clearly run out of options. Now would he finally start talking to terrorist leaders who matter in Iraq? And get Syria and Iran on board? That seems to be a long shot.

The only option I can think of is total withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq and to let the Iraqis decide their own fate.

But then what will happen to the neo-con agenda of controlling oil in the Middle East, the raison d’etre for which they have already spent a quarter of a trillion dollars of tax payers money and cost the lives of almost 3000 US soldiers and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi lives?

All for what?
