Apologies if this has been posted before - I've done a search and don't see it anywhere here.

Interesting interview on 'Quirks and Quarks' on CBC today - all about the seasonal 'dark spots' that appear on the Martian South Pole. Apparently, it's all to do with frozen CO2 sublimating at ground level and blowing up through overlying ice - forming big 'geysers', and taking the soil with it. Hence the 'dark spots'.

Very elegant theory - almost makes up for disappointment of it not being some form of vegetation.
