As these lines are being written, it is becoming apparent that Ehud Olmert intends to form a broad coalition government with Labor's agreement and participation, which will also include Yisrael Beiteinu. In exchange for the legitimacy granted to that proto-fascistic party and at least one seat for it in the government, party head Avigdor Lieberman promises to be "pragmatic" and to moderate his anti-Arab rhetoric for now.
But the problem is not only Lieberman and his party, which entered the elections on an openly racist platform. Olmert and his de facto partners in the coalition building process are declaring that they will only form a government with partners that are "Zionist parties." Such a government will continue alienating the Palestinian citizens of Israel, an alienation that is a disaster for the state and the government, no less than it is disastrous for the Arab citizens.
