Getting prepared for the end

There is so much discussion about the end of days and it seems there is also a growing awareness among the general population that something big is about to happen. Whether it's an american civil war, a pandemic or the end of the world in 2012, my question is how do we prepare? Assuming you agree with the underlying premis, what do you intend to do to get ready? Should we leave the cities and move to rural areas? Should we buy guns, stockpile food and fuel and build some kind of bunker/shelter? Or is this whole concept nonsense?
