According to the Fox News, a case of mad cow has been confirmed in Alabama. This thread has been updated to reflect the confirmation of positive test results from more accurate tests.

Fox News
A cow in Alabama has tested positive for mad cow disease, the Agriculture Department confirmed Monday, the third case in the U.S.

The animal was a beef cow but hadn't entered the food supply for people or animals, said the department's chief veterinarian, John Clifford.

A routine test last week had indicated the presence of the disease. Results were confirmed by more detailed testing at a government laboratory in Ames, Iowa, Clifford said.

The potential discovery of a third U.S. case of mad cow disease should not hurt beef trade, Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said on Monday, even as South Korea said it would block sales if it's confirmed.

"I do not think it will have a negative impact on trade with other countries," Johanns told reporters during a visit to Poland.

Final results were expected later this week from two definitive tests for the brain-destroying disease. The U.S. Agriculture Department announced the tests on Saturday, after a brain sample from a suspect animal yielded an "inconclusive" result in a less-accurate, rapid screening test.

This comes at a time when South Korea was set to resume beef imports from the US in April. South Korea has been quoted as stating that a positive test result will lead the country to continue its ban on US beef. The US' beef exports are already down 64% from a high of $3.8 billion USD in 2003.
