Why not a global government?

I often think that a lot of the world's problems may be solved with a global government rather than national governments. All of the countries could become like states and representatives from each state (country) that are voted for by the people, could convene together to make decisions. I suppose it would be similar to the way the UN works.

It seems that much unrest is generated by the perception the one needs to protect their own countries interests above another countries. If we had a global governement, all of the surplus funds could go to areas that truly need it, like many parts of Africa where famine and disease are huge problems. We wouldn't need to fight over oil and other commodities. Everyone would seemingly be working toward the same goal.

For the same reason that has been brought up the other 500 times this has been asked.
Because, which form do we force upon everyone? Mind if it is my constitutuon, as I don't want someone else's.

Want Sharia law, maybe? Hey, What about the thought of the one world government being a bit on the pshychotic side, like Hitler's was? Like to tell me who will come along and pull our butts out of the fire?

Utopian thoughts rarely work where the rubber meets the asphalt.

Let's go and try and build a Tower of Babel again and see how it works this time. It's going to happen again, and the result is going to be not to your liking, I am sure.

Because people in general are corrupt and crave power and when they control everything there is to control, the effects of one person or one group of people can have a much more disastrous effect. When humans are in control, there always needs to be at least one counter balancing force to keep them under control and that is why I am always opposed to a one world government. It's bad enough as it is, and we do have counter forces.

That itself is one of the reasons that a global government wouldn't work. Say that tommorow a world government just appeared, every country in the world signed a treaty which formed this global government. People wouldn't just magically forget their loyalties from their previous countries. Each country (or in your case, state) would go after making decisions where they would benefit and on a global scale, it just wouldn't work. There would be arguing and fighting, and that's when the people would remember this previous thing called "countries" and just secede from the global government.

However, a global government might seem a little more feasible if, say, we were to discover advanced extraterrestial intelligence equal to or greater than our own.

A lot of these posts are valid agruments, however I think the greater danger is not that we may end up with a Hitler style government, but one that takes too much time to make decisions. Remember, we will have representatives from all the states (countires). There is no "One" leader of the whole world.

I know movies and Tv shows are only science fiction and probably have no place in a discussion forum such as this, but how many alien civilisations are depicted with multiple ruling governments?

Interesting.. I studied dystopia in college and on the subject of one world government, my position remains largely the same as it did over a decade ago.

As long as human nature reigns, this will not be possible. Unfortunately, the peoples of the earth are far too diverse to allow for the unification of all under one tent. I could adopt the points Thomas Crown made, on this position. Humans are far too easily led by their brute emotions and historic rivalries to develop and embrace such world peace. One world government can only come through far more sinister means.

Well it seems to me, from what I can gather from the opinions expressed in this thread, a global government would be an more ideal solution than what we presently have, however the likelyhood of it ever occurring borders on impossible.

A dictatorship would be a fine choice to govern the entire world.

Well, just because is a common saying, it doesn't make it true.
Obviously one would become corrupt, but after a while, having ANYTHING they might want will tire.
Also, on a side note, if you single handedly govern the world, you probably deserve anything you want!

A dictatorship is the only way a world government could function, for reasons stated in earlier posts. Far from being an impossibility, I believe world government to be an inevitability. Not only do I see all the signs pointing in that direction, I believe the bible clearly predicts it. See Rev:13

Globalization is a movement aimed at eliminating state governments in lieu of one free and open market. It's propably the worst concept ever. Talk about self interest, corporations worship the bottom line and no resourse is to precious to plunder. The US is backing free-trade and open markets while at the same time paying subsidies to our farmers and increasing government size and scope. They are also surreptitiously meeting with Canada and Mexico to promote the North American Union(NAU) this will aid everyone by lowering wages for all workers across the board and eliminating national borders. Talk about immigration, it just won't be illegal any more. They call for transparency but their workings are anything but. Corporations are present at all these meetings to make sure that their interests are looked after. Like global warming it may be too late because everything is a big secret. This summer the Airlines were allowed to opt out of their obligation to workers by doing away with pension plans. Bankruptcy laws have changed to make it more difficult to file. There is presently a movement to dismantle the middle class and supplant democracy with corporatocracy. So all politics aside it's the economy stupid.

A Global Government?

Sounds good to me.

As long as I am in charge.

Can you imagine a global government that is legally able to exploit the people and resources of all the little and the third world countries ?

Would all the wealth in the world be divided equally between all nations so they all have even footing financially when they are given grants ?

Would we really be able to ensure that the poor and dying (AIDS victims and similar) would receive the nutrition and medical assistance ? Or would they be expendable under the global government ? Most governments do not even care now.

A global constitution would need to take into account the cultural differences and right of all men to practice their chosen religion without fear. I'd like to see that !!

I think this concept would generate more greed and out of control weirdos...totally unworkable.

There would be no shortage of contenders though, our world is full of clowns, puppets and morons who could and would be more than happy to ensconce themselves within a global government and rape, pillage and plunder all they can...nothing new...same old world we are used to.

You put your finger on the problem there.

There is too much inequality in the world to allow a world government to work properly. With such vast disparities in wealth, freedom, security, education, technical and industrial capacity and so much else -- and with the poor and disadvantaged hugely outnumbering the rich and privileged -- the only possibilities for a world government are capitalist tyranny or redistributive socialism (a different kind tyranny).

Globalization and structural reform are the only way to end these massive inequalities. They are not perfect prescriptions and they are far from painless, but the alternatives are simply unworkable.

I like this topic. Mostly because the UK Socialists say for Socialism to work the entire world has to be under it.

It goes right back to the root. Socialist, Sharia, Nazi, Capitalist, its all good for the people who set it up and asked for it but theres always going to be a group who wont stand for it.

One global government means theres nowhere to run for amnesty, no alternatives, no model for comparison. Just "this is the way it is." I cant think of anyone who would be happy living like that.

Who ever thought 7 billion people could all live under the same law was a moron. Or, an unemployed daydreamer. Or, a fundamental religious nutjob.

I wonder if the same people who push for one global government also say the people who blow themselves up in the name of creating one world government dont exist. Im sure theres some overlap of ideologies there.

Like whenever theres a "protest" theres every special interest group under the sun handing out fliers that more often than not have nothing to do with what the reason for assembly was. But thats another topic.

well, i see a global government as the only option for this world in the long term

This is a great question and all I've read have been excellent answers. I remember raising this question in my own mind once when I was much younger. It seemed like a great idea. It sounded so practical and efficient. It seemed to solve so many of the world's petty differences. Yeah, it sounded great except.....

Except when you consider one question. What if, by chance, you just happen not to agree with this new one world government? What then?

As it stands now, if you are in, say, the U.S. and you don't like what's going on in that country, you can leave. You could emigrate to another country. If you are in Russia and you don't like living under Vladimir Putin's regime, it might be more difficult but not impossible to find egress. Similar scenarios exist for every country on this planet. Sure, in many cases, getting out of country might not be easy. In fact, you might have to risk life and limb to do so. But, again, it is possible.

If we have a one world government and you happen to dislike the regime -- for any reason -- where are you going to go?

Quite frankly, I've thought about your proposal a lot and my conclusion is that in the perfect world it would be great but frankly people don't trust eachother enough to disband their armies and make this thing work.
