Ok now to my question, which may or may not have been asked before (not that I'm aware of at any rate) -- how exactly does one shield against and EMP?

Any dense material can be a shield from EMP earth, concrete, steel, lead etc.. Depending on the power of the EMP and material used shielding needed can vary from a few millimeters to yards.

There is also ways you can design electronic systems to make then less susceptible to the effects of EMP like Surge Protector and such creating the systems to withstand much higher currents.

The question is if Iran has a couple how many does the US have? How effective will the US version compared to the Iranian version?

The fallout of Iran using an emp weapon on the US would not be good for Iran and her people, it wont be made into glass but its economy would be destroyed there would be increased terrorist/seperatists bombings and assasinations in iran plus the oil rigs would be destroyed.

But lets hope none of it happens for the cost in blood and flesh is too great.

The whole article is propaganda and specultion based on a "what if" scenario. The simple fact is Iran's best missiles have a range larger than the size of the country and hence need to be detonated one way or another in mid air in order not to piss those off. Plus it's not like detonating in mid air is particularly difficult, it can be done by timers, radio signal or pressure sensors, whatever. It's been done already by Von Braun and the likes even before WWII.
