On Thursday, an attempt to assasinate Iranaian president failed. One of his bodyguards was killed and another wounded. The attempt to ambush the presidential motorcade was thwarted in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan, according to a semi-official newspaper. Ahmadinejad escaped injury because he was not in the car at the time.

WorldNetDaily.com
“At 6:50 pm on Thursday, the lead car in the presidential motorcade confronted armed bandits and trouble-makers on the Zabol-Saravan highway”, the semi-official Jomhouri Islami reported on Saturday.

“In the ensuing armed clash, the driver of the vehicle, who was an indigenous member of the security services, and one of the president’s bodyguards died, while another bodyguard was wounded”, the newspaper, which was founded by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, wrote.

An Iranian student dissident group reports rumors that some circles within the Islamic regime provided the necessary information to identify the vehicle.

Funny, can't seem to find this anywhere apart from World Net Daily, which is hardly a reputable source... Maybe wrong, but I can't find it.

Yes, this is not in the news up to now.

However, it can be found at some Iranian blogs

- and also here at the "Student Movement Coordination Committee for Democracy in Iran" site
[(SMCCDI) mouvement consist of students inside and outside of Iran, as well as Iranian professionals who share the students’ vision of a free, independent, democratic, secular and industrialized Iran]

and a semi-official Iranian newspaper which was which was founded by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had published this news

I think this might be a sign that the growingly secular and 'western-friendly' majority of Iran would rise up.

edit: Canadian Media now has an article:

Im not surprised if true.

1) He is a loose cannon even by the extremist standards and has made comments that have forced the Revolutionary Council to back off (at least publicaly)

2) He may be developing a "Cult of Personality" and somebody wanted to give him a return to reality.

3) I have been putting this forth since an Iranian AF plane went down a few years ago killing quite a large number of the Revolutionary Guard Officer corp. There is an active 5th coloum at work in Iran and they are starting to exert themselves. Could be royalists or just about anybody. This could be Operation Axax part II for all we know.

4) Revenge. Remember that the previous reform minded President had an attempt on his life, perhaps this is a tit for tat thing.

5) False Flag to try to expose traitors etc.

Here's a corroborating article, which was released 18 hours ago, based on a TV report:

ElyTimes

Bandits killed a guard of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hours before the leader visited southeastern Iran this week, state-run television reported Saturday.

The motive for the attack was unclear. Officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

It wouldn't surprise me if there are elements in the regime that want to see Ahmadinejad prematurely "retired", he's proven to be quite a loose cannon, and theologically he's apparently considered a bit of a cultist.

Honestly, I hope they succeed, as Ahmadinejad's increasingly bizzarre and extremist statements are providing those who want to start another disastrous war in the region exactly the ammunition they need.

Update:

Iran denied on Monday media reports that a firefight last week in the countrys lawless southeastern borderlands was an assassination attempt on President Ahmadinejad. (Khaleej Times)

Hardly and assasination attempt then, if it was well in advance of him being in the same province, let alone actually anywhere near the event.
