Nestle is recalling more than 2 million liters of baby milk from four European markets after traces of ink were found in the product.

Nestle spokesman Francois-Xavier Perroud told Dow Jones Newswires that some of the formula had been withdrawn in France, Portugal and Spain, but that the largest amount was in Italy, where he said up to 2 million liters (530,000 gallons) of milk had been recalled.

"This decision was taken as an extreme precautionary measure to reassure consumers even if, based on the declarations of the packaging supplier and a rigorous analysis of available facts also conducted by independent bodies, Nestle believes that the level of ITX measured in the tested products does not represent a health risk," the company said.

The recall has effected the market and Nestle shares were down 0.6 percent in afternoon trading on the Zurich exchange.

Investigating this story I came across a boycott of Nestlé.

Nestlé is the target of a boycott in 20 countries because it aggressively markets baby foods, breaking World Health Assembly marketing requirements and contributing to the death and suffering of infants around the world.

As UNICEF has said:

"Marketing practices that undermine breastfeeding are potentially hazardous wherever they are pursued: in the developing world, WHO estimates that some 1.5 million children die each year because they are not adequately breastfed. These facts are not in dispute."

Very interesting. I wonder if it is possible some extremists may of tampered with the Baby milk product that has been recalled.

The European Commission has made a statement on the contaminated milk.

"On the basis of the limited data available, the presence of ITX in food could be considered undesirable. However, it is not likely to present an immediate health risk at the levels reported," spokesman Philip Tod told a news briefing.

ITX was also unlikely to harm the genetic material of cells, he said. The EU agency was expected to give preliminary advice on the issue within two weeks and a final assessment by March.

I wonder if the milk has always been like this, and they just found out now? Or did they just recently change packaging and discovered the problem?
