Tornadoes
With the amount of media coverage dedicated to American storm-chasers, you'd think the US had the monopoly on these twisters. It doesn't. It might come as a shock, but the United Kingdom is actually the world's most tornado-prone nation.

This fact was calculated by the late Dr Fujita of Chicago University. He devised the standard method of measuring tornado intensity. Fujita figured that since Britain has an average of 33 tornadoes every year in an area 38 times smaller than the USA, you're twice as likely to witness a tornado here.

Parts of the central United States often called "Tornado Alley" are prone to the largest number of tornadoes in the entire world. They dont call it Tornado alley for nothing. And where talking monster, mile-wide twisters F4 and F5s+.

The UK does have more for a for its size as it a small country and what we call "Tornado Alley" in the USA is not a country of its own. Also when was the last time the UK was hit by a F5 plus tornado

T is for Tornado

Think of tornadoes and you probably think of the Great Plains of America - the setting for films such as the Wizard of Oz and Twister. That is certainly where the deadliest of them originate. (The Tristate Twister of 1925 travelled over 200 miles, killing almost 200 people and injuring another 2000.)

We get more than our fair share of tornadoes in the West Country. Nature loves a vortex.
Richard Angwin
Whilst the United States are home to the biggest and most destructive tornadoes, they have been recorded on every continent - even Antarctica - and the UK has the highest reported frequency per unit area, in the world.
