i wanted to know if there was a way of saving streaming video's to file?
pref with a software that is free if required

Some are free, some are not. Watch out for spyware or DRM stuff (copy-protection).

Often it's as easy in Firefox as right-clicking on the page and click View Page Info, go to Media tab, select the Embed line and click Save As.

Or look inside the 'C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files' folder or 'C:\Windows\Temp'.
