A second strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 shook a port city in western Turkey on Monday, only hours after a magnitude 5.7 quake sent terrified residents running from their homes.

The first quake struck at 8:45 a.m. local time and was centred in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Izmir, the Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory said. It caused minor damage but no injuries.

There are earthquakes in turkey because of what's going on in africa. The african continent is rifting apart, thats what the mountains and great lakes are all about. This rifting is also what lead to the ripping off of arabia from africa and the formation of the Red sea. This system extends thru israel, all the way up into turkey.

The tectonics of the region is pretty interesting, and of course its odd to think of that whole part of the world splitting in two and forming a new future ocean basin.
