Breaking news

An early-morning car bomb has killed at least 75 people and injured many more in a mainly Shia area of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, police sources say.

A couple of hours earlier, gunmen killed 17 people in the nearby town of Taji after dragging them from their homes in the middle of the night. The victims, said to be civilians, were shot dead in execution-style killings.

According to an interior ministry official quoted by AFP news agency, the attackers in Taji, 15km (nine miles) north of Baghdad, arrived in the town on "military vehicles" and were dressed as soldiers. They "arrested several [people] before assembling them on a public square and shooting them", said the unnamed official.

Bush threatened increased international isolation for Damascus, accusing Syrian President Bashar Assad of not doing enough to secure the border. "The Syrian leader must understand we take his lack of action seriously," Bush said.

On Monday, Zalmay Khalilzad, U.S. ambassador to Iraq, said that Syria is "the No. 1 offender" of impeding success in Iraq.

There is blatant interference by Syria in Iraqi affairs, by allowing these terrorists to come across," Khalilzad said. "And as I said before, our patience is running out.

We have given it every opportunity. The time is running out for more of the same

When asked whether a military option against Syria was under consideration, Khalilzad said, "Everything is on the table."

I don't think the U.S has the ability to start a war with Syria at the moment, but once they free up resources they are going in.

Apparently the car bomb was used to greater effect by the suicide bomber calling people to him offering work in Bagdhad.

www.abc.net.au...

A very devious ploy to maximise the damage...Iraqis must be careful even looking for employment.

Khalilzad is the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, a part of the US government.
He's not a part of the Iraqi Government.

I'm not sure why this is being pinned on Syria since I didn't see any mention of Syria in those articles about this bomb blast.

Kadhimiya is not even close to the Syria border, it's just up the road from Abu Ghraib.

More bombs. More than 150 dead and hundreds injured. Al Qaeda claim responsibility and say it is revenge for Tal Afar.

BBC: Scores killed in Baghdad attacks

More than 150 people have been killed and hundreds injured in a series of bomb attacks and shootings across Iraq. In the worst incident, at least 114 people were killed and 160 injured when a car bomb exploded in Baghdad's mainly Shia district of Kadhimiya.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq claimed it had begun a nationwide bombing campaign to avenge a recent major offensive on rebels. In a statement on a website, the group said it acted after US and Iraqi forces attacked insurgents in the northern town of Talafar.

When you think about it, the insurgency is being replenished somehow. Either that or the terrorists have 9 lives each. The most obvious conduit for people and supplies for the insurgency is through Syria. This area has been under attack by the coalition and Iraqi troops this week; yesterday's carbombs and executions were in retaliation.

I don't know the exact casualty count of insurgents in Talafar, all I have heard was that "dozens" were killed.

It's well over one hundred killed and hundreds more captured.
From the BBC link above:

Iraqi officials said 157 rebels were killed and nearly 300 arrested during the operation.

Some have mentioned that the attacks have come from insurgents who crossed the Syrian Border. This may well be, but what about the insurgents who were left behind in Iraq? What about the new breed of insurgents that have come through the ranks? And there will be some. They have plenty of people to brainwash into doing this kind of thing.

It matters not where they come from, but what they do and can they be stopped. Baghdad is not the only place to be suffering these type of attacks. Check any related article on Basrah, or any other Major coalition stronghold.

Its country wide. How the hell do we stop these mindless idiots from doing this? Basically ,we cant. We cannot stop something that we don't see. It all goes back to the question (and other threads) what is a terrorist ,and how do you stop them?

We are in a no win situation. Even if we pull everything out of Iraq, there will still be this type of thing going on. The only conciliation to this is, no coalition troops would get caught up in it. Maybe thats wrong to say, but its true and most people would agree with me on that one.

Ending this now would save coalition lives, but not innocent Iraqis. Do we care enough about the fate of those who want a better way of life? Do we care enough about those that have got to put up with the way of life they have now?

Maybe thats a good title for a new thread? I dunno?
But I'm gunna leave it here for now..........................

I guess after the devastation in the south is cooling off, now we are back to the news from Iraq.

And again they are not very good at all.

Yes terrorist "ARE" coming from the borders, but how many of the fighters are actually Iraqis.

Yes is plenty of them and they are not going to stop.

Washington Post: Series of Baghdad Attacks Kill At Least 160

Over a Dozen Bombings, Rocket Attacks Target Civilians and U.S. Military

Targets included crowds of Iraqi civilians and at least three U.S. military convoys. The deadliest attack, in a northwest Baghdad neighborhood, exploded among crowds of Shiite Muslim day laborers gathered to look for work.

Panicked families ran from hospitals to morgues, many seeking more than one dead relative. Armed gunmen--both Shiite militia and Iraqi regular forces--held intersections and closed roads around the city as attacks, and rumors of attacks, grew.

"Explosion! Explosion!" a Shiite militia fighter yelled at one crossing, waving an AK-47 to turn back families looking for their dead.

Another blast just killed at least 15 more people, 10 policemen and 5 civilians.

MSNBC: At least 15 dead in new Baghdad blast

Sept. 15, 2005

Al-Qaida in Iraq declares all-out war

At least 10 policemen and five civilians were killed Thursday when a suicide bomber drove his car into a convoy of police vehicles in Baghdad’s southern Dora district, police said. Ten others were wounded in the 8 a.m. attack, said Lt. Thair Mahmoud. Three police vehicles were destroyed.

al-Qaida's leader in Iraq purportedly declared all out war on Shiite Muslims, Iraqi troops and the country's government in an audio tape released on Internet. Al-Qaida claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attacks.

The speaker on the released audio tape, introduced as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, also said his militant forces would attack any Iraqi it believes has cooperated with an ongoing U.S.-led offensive in the northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar. "If proven that any of (Iraq's) national guards, police or army are agents of the Crusaders, they will be killed and his house will demolished or burnt — after evacuating all women and children — as a punishment," the voice said in the new tape, which surfaced on an Internet site known for carrying extremist Islamist content.

The speaker announced "all-out war against Shiites everywhere. Beware, there will be no mercy."

Times Argus: Second Day of Iraq Mayhem Kills 31 (AP News)

Suicide bombers inflicted another day of mayhem in the capital Thursday, killing at least 31 people in two attacks about a minute apart that targeted Iraqi police and Interior Ministry commandos. The carnage left nearly 200 people dead just two days.

Al-Qaida in Iraq, headed by Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, claimed responsibility for the bombing campaign launched after an Iraqi-U.S. force of 8,500 soldiers stormed Tal Afar, an insurgent bastion, this week.

Al-Zarqawi then purportedly declared "all-out war" on Shiite Muslims, Iraqi troops and the government in what the United States has called a desperate propaganda campaign to derail the political process.
