Russian President, Vladimir Putin, told a group of reporters today that he has no intention of modifying Russia's constitution to allow him to run for a 3rd term. 60% of Russian citizens want President Putin, who's second term ends in 2008, to stay on for a 3rd term. He said that Russia needs stability and the best way to ensure that is to not modify the constitution.

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has denied planning to change the constitution to stay in office for a third term.

Speaking to journalists in Moscow, he said Russia needed stability, and the best way to ensure that was by leaving the constitution unchanged.

Mr Putin has repeatedly said he will step down at the next presidential elections in 2008.

There had been speculation that a way might be found for him to stay on.

Its interesting to know that the Russians copied the American 22nd Amendment. I never knew they did that.

President Putin enjoys a situation whereby his citizens blame all that is wrong within Russia on the politicians and bureaucrats that surround him. An enviable position for any political leader to find himself in. I am on the fence whether its a good thing that Putin has chosen to not attempt to run for a third term. Who is going to replace him? Will he be as cooperative and amiable to the American's as Putin?
