I got this email from a friend, makes sense to me. We're being gouged by Big Oil, let's gouge back:

LADIES & GENTLEMEN

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.

AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES.

THEREFORE SEPTEMBER 1st HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THESE TWO NATIONS SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT DAY.

THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT.

WAITING ON THE GOVERNMENT TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED TWO WEEKS AGO?

REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT THE

SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO!

W! E CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT

AGAIN AND AGAIN.

SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE SEPTEMBER 1ST A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH".

This is a cool idea!

now if everyone actually DID it................

consumers dont seem to realise that they have the power in this society, NOT the corporations!

Ahh this old trick. I say this old trick because we have tried it in agriculture when the commodity prices get crappy.

Nobody sells, and eventually things change.

But you know what. Not all cooperate. Its just too far fetched.

Better yet, don't buy gasoline at all that entire week, take the bus, ride a bike, walk...

because if everyone refuses to buy gasoline for one day, then they will undoubtedly buy it the day before or the day after the boycott. Ergo, the oil companies still get their bucks and you all remain fat and happy behind the wheel believing that you have 'affected' change.

been doing fine without a car for many years now, stick that in your S.U.V. and smoke it.

That works just fine in an area where you can do this. Unfortunately I and many others cannot.

Sounds great to me; I could go a week without buying gas. But if western culture has taught us anything, it is that it is impossible to convince six hundred million people to do the same thing at the same time.

on coast 2 coast i heard something really quick about how the gas boycott is actually supposed to be from the 29th to the 31st or something. a 3 day boycott could definately have a bigger impact.

Dam, Vance beat me to the punch, love snopes.com as well, infact Intrepid's note that started this thread looks like it was cut and pasted from snopes and then slightly altered (no offense Intrepid).

In all honasty it would be nice if it were that easy, send an email, boycott gas for a day and the watch the price drop back to $1.20 per gallon again.
