US paying more attention to China's military (moved from ATSNN), page 1

China's economy is booming. They are growing their military and are beginning to focus themselves past the Taiwan situation (which China has said will invade if Taiwan continues to seek formal independence.) Improvements in their missile program will allow for long range missiles to reach the much further out in the globe, including the US (who is the main weapons supplier to Taiwan and have urged China not to take any military action against Taiwan.) According to a 45 page report on the China/Taiwan situation, the China's latest weapons capabilities are in direct line with "deterring" Taiwan from attempting to gain independence from Beijing.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- China cannot be certain that its military, while steadily strengthening, is capable of conquering Taiwan, the Pentagon said Tuesday in a new report on Chinese military power and strategy.

Over the longer term, however, an increasingly modernizing Chinese military could pose a threat to U.S. and other forces in the Asia-Pacific region, it said.

"Some of China's military planners are surveying the strategic landscape beyond Taiwan," the report said.

Among a number of such developments, it noted improvements in Chinese intercontinental-range missiles "capable of striking targets across the globe, including the United States."

Air and naval force improvements also appear to be geared for operations beyond the geography around Taiwan, an island less than 160 kilometers (100 miles) off the Chinese coast, it added.

Fueled by a booming economy and foreign arms purchases, China's military is developing new capabilities in line with Beijing's strategy of deterring Taiwan from declaring its independence and countering a potential U.S. military intervention, according to the 45-page report, an annual assessment required by Congress.

Donald Rumsfeld is urging that the EU continue it's trade embargo with China, while some members of the EU, like France, are trying to end the embargo. Last month, it was reported that Beijing had hired Bill Gates and Microsoft to developed a web portal that will keep Chinese internet users from being able to search specific politically charged words, like "freedom," "civil liberties," and "democracy."

Wait.. there's a trade embargo with China?

What's all that stuff on Walmart shelves? Or is it only "other people" that aren't allowed to trade with China?

Embargo on military technology.

I'd say Clinton negated any righteous ability to demand that embargo.
