The State Department is warning its citizens away from Uzbekistan due to risks of terrorist attacks. The American government fears reprisals and continued civil unrest following the bloody riots in Andijan. According to the State Department website they have "received information that terrorist groups may be planning attacks against U.S. interests in Uzbekistan in the near future,"

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan - The United States warned its citizens Saturday of potential terror attacks against American targets in Uzbekistan following the recent deadly riots in the Central Asian nation — a U.S. ally in the war against terrorism.

The State Department urged Americans in the country to "exercise extreme caution, including avoiding large crowds, celebrations, and places where Westerners generally congregate."

Not meaning to sound ignorant but are there that many Americans that visit Uzbekistan? Wouldnt the threat be greatest to the American military base in the south of the country?

Islamic extremists will find fertile ground in Uzbekistan following the massacre of 700+ unarmed civilians that the pro-US Karimov regime gunned down. I cant help but feel the Americans should withdraw from Uzbekistan and drop its allied relationship with Uzbekistan until an international report can either clear or condemn Karimov in the Andijan massacre.

This warning has also been posted by the Australian government as of today.
This Advice is current for Sunday, 29 May 2005.
The Advice was issued on Wednesday, 18 May 2005, 18:03:03, AEST.

This advice has been reviewed and reissued. It contains new information on safety and security. The overall level of the advice has not changed.

Australians in Uzbekistan are advised to exercise extreme caution. Recent reports suggest that terrorists may be in the advanced stages of planning attacks. These could occur at any time, anywhere in Uzbekistan, including the capital Tashkent, and could be directed against a range of targets, including locations known to be frequented by foreigners.

Australians are advised to defer all travel to the Ferghana Valley in eastern Uzbekistan, including the city of Andizhan, until further notice. There are reports that up to several hundred protesters were killed during a civil uprising on 13-14 May 2005 in Andizhan.

Australians are advised to defer non-essential travel to the regions bordering Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan due to the uncertain security situation and risk posed by landmines in those areas. Australians are advised to defer non-essential travel to the regions bordering Afghanistan due to the hazardous security situation in that country.

including avoiding large crowds

Thats pretty wise considering how the government just open fires on said crowds. You'd be wise to avoid going near any Uzbek civilians for fear of getting shot at by Karimovs cronies.
