Evangelists Embracing Environmentalism

This is a long article, but it is interesting. There
seems to be some evangelists who are taking
scripture verses about taking care of the earth
to heart. IF this is true, and IF this is a trend
that continues, it is good news.

I don't know if this is a new trend or fad and it
will fade ... or if this is the real deal and it has
been the thought process all along and it's just
people assume evangelists don't care about
the planet.

Increasingly, evangelists are embracing environmentalism

PHILADELPHIA - (KRT) - One of Calvin DeWitt's favorite Bible verses is
Revelation 11:18:

"... The time has come for judging the dead ... and for destroying those
who destroy the Earth."

DeWitt, a professor of environmental studies at the University of
Wisconsin, is a leader in a growing evangelical Christian movement to
protect the environment in the name of God.

"This comes right out of the Christian calling of how we should live our lives
on Earth," DeWitt said. "Christians are coming on board more and more
because there really is an interest in seeking the kingdom of God beyond
just individual needs."

On such issues as global climate change, endangered species, and mercury
hazards to the unborn, many evangelical Christians are parting ways with
conservatives. They are embracing environmental protection
as "stewardship" of God's creation.

One such expression came last week, when President Bush gave the
commencement address at Calvin College, a small school in the Reformed
tradition in Grand Rapids, Mich. A third of the faculty of the college signed
an open letter to Bush, citing "conflicts between our understanding of
what Christians are called to do and many of the policies of your
administration."

Yeah I've heard about this movement before and it is Heartening to say the least. I personally haven't met any of the Evengelic-Enviros yet but from what I have heard, they are really putting their money where their mouth is. I heard of one church that completely re-built it's church with R40+ insulation with Solar Panels and Radiant Heating. If memory serves me correctly it was so effiecient that that during Sunday Service in WINTER they actually had to turn the Air Conditioning on as the combined heat of everyone made the Church TOO warm.

There was a web site for an organization that called itself the "Religious Center for Environmental Conservation".

Their web site proclaimed the Mt. St. Helens erupted because of logging. It seems the weight of the trees was holding all that lava in, and when they cut the trees, the lava was unrestrained...

They lost my interest after reading that statement.

If you want to embrace environmental principles based on Biblical moral grounds, then by all means do so. But at least base your environmental activism on reality and sound science, not the nonsensical eco-babble that presently dominates the environmental industry.
