Politicians from the three main parties pledged to help the poor in speeches marking World Poverty Day.

Gordon Brown highlighted Labour's push for world agreement on fighting HIV, TB and malaria, and for the cancellation of the world's poorest countries' debt.

Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy called for richer nations to stop dumping its subsidised goods on poorer nations.

The Tory leader Michael Howard stressed that fairer trade would enable less developed states to sustain themselves.
