In short... Nearly 90 years ago three children in Portugal were regularly visited in the fields by an apparition of the Virgin Mary. During these visions Mary revealed three distinct predictions or 'secrets' to the children. The first two, which were published long ago, dealt with the Bolshevik revolution and WW2 (and images of hell). The Third secret, which was to have been revealed by the Church in 1960, was kept closed by Pope John XXIII and left for his successors in the Vatican archives (since John XXIII was considered the most open pope of all time, many people, in 1960, felt that he was too personally terrified by the prophetic vision to introduce it to the world). After he was shot in 1981, Pope John Paul II formed a special relationship with the Fatima story (he was always dedicated to Mary) and asked that his chief theological advisor release the third secrets contents....

...that advisor was Cardinal Ratzinger, now Benedict XVI.

So, to be very clear, here, only a handfull of men have ever read the raw, unedited transcripts of Sister Lucia (one of the Fatima children) and the last man to do so went on to become Pope. He also, it should be noted, is widely suspected of having 'edited out' some of the scary stuff when he revealed the third secret (which centers on penitence):

So,
1) Was Ratzinger picked, in part, because of his special knowledge?
2) Or were the events described in the third secret prevented by JPII's various efforts to consecrate distant lands for Mary?

Very adroit of you to these connections between Benedict 16 and the late Pope..Please look in the religion threads,as I cannot point to it directly..
