Drug Cocktail May Prevent Cancers Caused by AIDS, page 1

A cocktail of drugs taken by AIDS patients is believed to help prevent some cancers caused by the disease according to a new report released by international researchers and published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The drugs, which are called Highly Active Retroviral Treatment or HAART suppress the AIDS virus have been found to prevent Pnuemonia and other illnesses caused by the HIV virus destroying the immune system and lowers risks of cancers such as Non Hodgkins Lymphoma and Kaposi's Sarcinoma.

hey analyzed the records of more than 7,300 Swiss HIV patients and found those on HAART had lower risks of Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma compared with those who did not use HAART.

Nonetheless, Kaposi's sarcoma -- a cancer marked by red skin lesions and one of the hallmarks of full-blown AIDS -- was 20 times more common in HIV patients than in the general population. So was non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system.

The incidence of other cancers such as anal cancer, cervical, liver, non melanoma skin cancers and cancers of the mouth and pharynx is not reduced by the drug cocktail in the patients who have a larger susecpability to such cancers than the genral poulation.
