A chit chat. . . update on Covid-19

I didn't want to start yet another Covid-19 thread, but I did want to share some pertinent information.

Was speaking to some folks at a triage center earlier this week.

We were talking about numbers and rates and we came to the general conclusion that the numbers are worthless.

At the triage center, if a person comes in with a fever, cough, shortness of breath, but good O2 sats they are sent home with no testing,

If they have all the symptoms with low O2 sats, then they are admitted to the hospital and are tested and treated.

So the numbers we are seeing are from people with O2 sats @ 92 or worse, admitted and treated.

We are not testing the people with all the symptoms but good O2 saturation.

We focus on the wrong things, wear panic pants and watch the media and do exactly want they want us to do.

Panic and trust them.

Covid-19 is a serious disease but not the doomish, end-of-life event that we are led to believe.

So use some critical thinking, deny ignorance, stay calm, reasoned and rational.

It will be okay.

I agree.

In a perfect world, if EVERYBODY in each country/state could be tested, and the results correlated with the 'natural' daily mortality rate (including people who die WITH the virus rather than FROM it - that all-important distinction), then we will know where we stand, and confirm that it's not at all as bad as many think it is.

As explained in another thread, my UK town (which hosted the first officially contracted UK case) has probably been 50%-80% infected since Nov/Dec 2019 without most of us realising it. My wife, myself and my Dad, for example, all now believe that we contracted it in January, although it wasn't until today that we reflected on the symptoms we had back then (dry cough for 2 to 3 days, hot nights) but had since forgotten - such is human nature because we just soldier on. Hindsight told a different story, though.

Germany has led the way in testing, thereby providing much more accurate information regarding daily mortality and Covid's role in it. Testing in itself, unless on a massive scale, is useless as a measurement, although obviously essential for emergency staff, nurses, care workers etc.

Basically, I think we're gonna be fine. If only we could just STOP running around screaming (metaphorically speaking).

I might take a break from ATS for a while anyway, just to let things cool down a bit; it's all so bloody NOISY!

Or I might not. Dunno.

The illness is not, but the reaction or the people is. There is a real potential we, the people, will hurt ourselves because of fear. The potential damage if we do not snap out of this spiral of fear is immense in my Dumbass view.

And I'm glad to see more and more people are seeing that.

But what I'm gonna do. 🤷🏽‍♂️

My wife just said that Abbot has just finished a new type of testing kit...

You get the results in 5 minutes and it is FDA approved.

They are starting to ship next week at 50,000 kits a... day? I believe.

Not sure on the production numbers.

So one NY hospital was typically using 10-20k masks a week before this virus.

Now they are using 300k masks in the same time period.

So what made that number change so much?

People are panicking. Thus the high amount of calls.

Instead of using common sense, just 3 weeks ago, DeBlasio was encouraging people to congregate.

Before you get on your high horse, you first must determine what the census of the hospitals were BEFORE the virus outbreak.

Hell, people are probably selling them illegally.

I had to help the charge nurse look for masks today at work.

I had a skeleton key and the Materials Director had them all in his office because people are grabbing them like popcorn.

And while I do know that hospitals generally operate at a high capacity insofar as beds are concerned, I don't recall them being inundated as they seem to be.
