To save face. It really might be as simple as that. Given how the world is looking at them and their poor reaction as to why the virus spread (unjustly in my opinion) they might want to show that they have "Tamed the Virus" so that the world will see them in a light of strength. It doesn't matter if it's true or not, but instead it matters what they think about themselves. Culture allows people to do funny things with a self appointed set of reason.
