This is interesting, ATS.

I came across a trailer for a movie where a Black woman goes back in time to the slavery era and becomes a slave. She seems to be on some kind of mmission but the trailer was kind-of vague as to exactly what that mission might be.

Interesting concept. What says ATS?

Slavery became common within much of Europe during the Dark Ages and it continued into the Middle Ages. The Byzantine–Ottoman wars (1265–1479) and the Ottoman wars in Europe (14th to 20th centuries) resulted in the capture of large numbers of Christian slaves. The Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, British, Arabs and a number of West African kingdoms played a prominent role in the Atlantic slave trade, especially after 1600.

In the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, slaves became quite rare by the first half of the 7th century[1] A shift in the view of slavery is noticed, which by the 10th century transformed gradually a slave-object into a slave-subject.[2] From 11th century, semi-feudal relations largely replaced slavery, seen as "an evil contrary to natury, created by man's selfishness", although slavery was permitted by the law.[3]

The major European languages, including English, used variations of the word "slave", in references to Slavic laborers of Byzantium.[4][5]

I am done with the white guilt / slavery narrative. I wasn’t alive then and my ancestors were in Germany until just before world war 2.

Time to move on.

I saw that trailer, and I didn't get it. I feel stupid now that I didn't get that it was time travel. I wondered what the heck it was about. I'm wary of anything these days that may try to push an agenda. Let's face it, so many movies and t.v. shows now seem to only want to shape people's minds with a social agenda. I'm kind of sick of it.

How many people died in the US civil war to end slavery?
Not enough, boom tish

If every white male died, maybe that would have been justices, white guilt is universal, evidently

It will probably win an Oscar. Hollywood loves to use (sorry, I meant support) black people.

And who was instrumental in abolishing Slavery?

Yep, you guessed it ...

en.wikipedia.org...

William Wilberforce (24 August 1759 – 29 July 1833)[1] was a British politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. A native of Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, he began his political career in 1780, eventually becoming an independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Yorkshire (1784–1812). In 1785, he became an evangelical Christian, which resulted in major changes to his lifestyle and a lifelong concern for reform.

My Republican ancestors gave their lives fighting to free the slaves and defeat their Democrat masters.

I'll pass on this one.

So let me guess, this movie's going to be a vague excuse to show black people being beaten and whipped and # on screen for entertainment while trying to make the audience feel bad for some # that happened a few hundred years ago all wrapped up in some loose nonsensical time travel bull# that exists only as an excuse to get a modern black woman back in time so they can start showing the beatings and whippings.

Think I'd rather go see the movie I seen previews for a little while ago about some hillbillies turning the tides on some rich people that hunt them for sport or something. That one looked pretty #ing awesome, guilt ridden thinly veiled torture porn with an agenda, not so much.

Not trying to "guilt" anyone. I just think the concept is interesting.

I'm fascinated by it. I love reading about it, especially slave narratives. In fact, I saw Roots for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and loved that, too.

And I'm white.

Doesn't make sense. That's like saying we shouldn't do any more movies about the holocaust because german guilt has been over done..

Us and Get Out were really good. I think this movie is being done by the same guy. Also, Django was really good and that had a lot of horrible slave stuff in it.

People getting hunted by rich elites. That's been done a thousand times too. Just really depends how well you can make a movie.

Get out would have been good if the entire movie was there. All I could think the whole time watching it is that the original cut must have been like three hours long...so many unresolved plot threads and just some weird disjointed # and for a movie with a subplot about one of the main characters smoking(that never actually gets resolved or really addressed), not a single cigarette is actually shown in the movie.

It might be based on a book called "Kindred" by Octavia Butler. My book group read this book about a woman who goes back and forth in time and when she goes back she is a Black woman in the antebellum era of the American South and ends up being enslaved.
