Sad news today that Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson has died , Roxette were a Swedish two piece group that first came to my attention with the rather great "Joyride" , they went on to be a dominant force through the the 1990s with hit after hit , to me they showed that pop music could be guitar based and didn't have to be Pap.

Despite their popularity in Scandinavia, Capitol Records declined to release their records in the US.

It wasn't until an American student studying in Sweden brought a copy of their second album home to Minneapolis, and persuaded a local radio DJ to play The Look, that they achieved international fame.

That song became the first of four US number ones for the band, while its parent album, Look Sharp!, went platinum.

They achieved their biggest success when their 1987 Christmas single, It Must Have Been Love, was re-written for inclusion on the Pretty Woman soundtrack in 1990. It topped the charts in more than 10 countries, and gave the band their biggest UK hit, reaching number three.

Never liked Roxette but their music b rings back memories of glorious days.

I can't believe I'm surviving her.

Roxette forms a small part of my musical DNA. My mother had some of their CDs when I was a boy. I definitely enjoyed some of their tunes, and as an adult musician I spent a small amount of time analyzing them to deepen my understanding of what makes pop music "tick".

RIP, thanks for the songs.

I saw this earlier today... total bummer.

Big C claims another.

It was not that I listened to them along with all of my other stuff but I did not dislike them! Good guitar pop, great hooks, and solid singing, you really can't ask for much more than that. But that was the dawn of MTV and the band exploded onto the world... and mine.

RIP, Marie! Thanks for the music!

It's pretty interesting how a lot of people on this forum must be about my age. This was stuff that was popular when I was a teenager. Most people online would not know who these people were.

I'm kind of a sucker for live performances of songs I used to like. I was looking for one of The Look not too long ago and was surprised she was in such bad shape. I knew it wouldn't be long.
