Thousands of human bones from both children and adults found beneath stone slab at Vatican college

While the Italian police was searching the Vatican for missing teen Emanuela Orlandi, they unexpectedly found thousands of previously unknown human bones.

...This led them to the discovery of containers of bones under a stone slab beneath the college, which were opened Saturday.

Emanuela's brother, Pietro, who was not at the Vatican Saturday, told ABC News officials had dug up a "large number of diverse bones." He added that it could take weeks to identify and sort them all.

Portera, the family's forensic expert, said "thousands of bones have been found."
"I can't say if it's 1,000 or 2,000, but there are really very many, and so we assume the presence of the remains of a few dozen people," Portera said. "There are long bones, small bones, many are fragmented."

Mr. Portera said that the bones appeared to belong to people of various ages, and that craniums belonging to adults, but also children, had been found. Using carbon-14 dating methods, the bones could be accurately dated, he said.

Laura Sgro, the Orlandi family lawyer who was present during Saturday’s examination, said that the two ossuaries were underground, in a building adjacent to the cemetery, and that they contained “very many bones.”

“Certainly some are historic, older, but at first sight it’s not possible to do an accurate dating,” she told reporters.

The Vatican was built upon 2 ancient, known cemeteries...and there are photos of them-garden type positions overlooked in the back(northern) end pre-and post Vatican construction.

No sacrifices...just 2 burial grounds

If it´s just bones from the cemetery then why is ABC and NY Times writing about it, and why is there talk of carbon dating the bones and other research? If it was obviously just cemetery bones, then why would the police and media care enough to make a case out of it?
