The use of Humor, including off color jokes, has various reasons, including personal fear and a desire to fit in.

I was a tile finisher working in a large development in '89-'90. The roach coach that made the morning rounds was owned and operated by a recently arrived family from Iraq. They made the best and biggest breakfast burritos.

The date 1990 is significant. The news back then was wall-to-wall anti-Iraq jingoism. So you can imagine the discomfort experienced by Iraqis in the U.S.

So I order my usual breakfast burrito and coffee one morning and the guy asks "Want to hear a joke? How do you get … out of a tree?"

I just shook my head and said "Nah, that's not a good way to fit in."

Now I'll just drink my drink in silence.
