Repeat member.

My last account is inaccessible due to not being used for a period of years so I created a new one. I think my last handle was Toblakai.

Been in and out of this site for 15-ish years.

Massive fan of Warhammer 40k, Malazan books and all things Fantasy and SciFi.

Have a good one folks and I'll see you around.

Malazan books

Stephan Donaldson recommends it rather highly in Epic Fantasy: Necessary Literature .

I seriously loved The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. Okay, note to self: Steven Erikson, Gardens of the Moon.

Love Donaldson. Thomas Covenant books are fantastic.

The Malazan books are probably my favorite fantasy series of all time. Absolutely love everything about them and have re read the entire series approx 4 times.

Heartbreaking, inspiring and fascinating.

I want Erickson to get to work on his Toblakai trilogy as he is one of my favorite characters ever, hence the previous screen name lol.

Favorite books in the series were, in no particular order:

Dead house Gates
Toll the Hounds

And Returnof the Crimson Guard.

So what you're saying is : if I read the first book, then I'll probably read them all?

Okay. I haven't read a whole series in a long while; like 2013, that's not counting re-reading a couple of series. About time for something new!

I'll order it right now!!!

The thing about the book Gardens of the Moon is that it drops you right into the middle of everything with NO explanation of what the hell is going on.

It's an interesting way to start a series to say the least. Pretty confusing.

But, IMO, it's worth it to push through. Because of how it starts the first one can be a tough read.

The magic is totally unique and original.

But it's all explained eventually lol.

And if this will help the 2nd book is about a conquered chieftain that's conscripted into the Malazan army and is tasked with escorting 10's of thousands of refugees across a continent while being under constant attack with an absolutely soul-crushing ending.

Dragons
Alternate dimensions
Immortals.
Hyper-intelligent dinosaur race with advanced science.
Lost in time travellers.
Unique races.

Just don't judge the series on the first book because it is not indicative of the series. Well it is and it isnt. Lol. The beauty is when you start to get a handle on the universe.

I almost quit the series when an amazing character was killed because i was legit pissed off. Threw the book across the room and didnt start reading again for about 2 weeks lol.

I know I'm rambling but I just love the series so much.

There is also a series done by his co-writer/co-creater Ian C Esselmont that expands on storylines touched upon in the main series.

Edit- the MalazanWiki is incredibly helpful too.

Welcome (back) and well met!

If you like high fantasy, you're definitely going to want to check out Guy Gavriel Kay.

I enjoyed Donaldson's Mordant's need series.

I go back and forth between fantasy and sci-fi myself.

GGK is great and anything by Donaldson is a must read.

I recently finished Chronicles of the Black Company series by Glen Cook which was fantastic but quite nihilistic.

And I absolutely devour anything and everything written by Peter F Hamilton. Who is probably my favorite scifi writer of the last decade.

Thanks for the greeting!
